Urumqi, China – Ismail Mukhtar, the Director of the Somali National News Agency (SONNA), is currently in China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region as part of a high-level international media delegation. The visit, which commenced this week, aims to offer global media leaders an unfiltered and comprehensive understanding of Xinjiang’s economic vitality, social cohesion, and cultural landscape.

The delegation, comprising directors from prominent media houses worldwide, is on a multi-day tour designed to delve into the daily lives and experiences of the people of Xinjiang. This initiative provides a crucial platform for direct observation, allowing journalists to bypass external narratives and report on the ground-level realities of a region that has often been at the center of international attention.

Upon arrival, Director Mukhtar emphasized the importance of objective reporting and expressed his anticipation for the upcoming engagements. “Our mission here is to see, listen, and understand,” Mukhtar stated. “It is vital for international media to engage directly with the people and witness the developments firsthand, rather than relying solely on secondhand accounts. This visit allows us to gain a balanced perspective on Xinjiang’s progress and the lives of its diverse communities.”

The itinerary for the delegation is comprehensive, featuring visits to various key sites across the region. These include modern agricultural facilities, bustling urban centers, industrial parks, and cultural heritage sites. The focus is on showcasing Xinjiang’s economic achievements, particularly its role in China’s Belt and Road Initiative, and the efforts made to preserve the rich cultural traditions of its various ethnic groups.

Delegates will have the opportunity to interact with local residents, entrepreneurs, and community leaders. These interactions are designed to highlight the economic opportunities being created, the improvements in living standards, and the social harmony fostered through various development programs. Discussions will also touch upon the strategies employed to integrate technological advancements while respecting and maintaining traditional customs.

Director Mukhtar’s participation is particularly significant for Somalia, as it shows the growing bilateral relations between Somalia and China. His visit will offer a unique Somali and African perspective on the region’s development, shedding light on the potential for similar collaborative economic and social initiatives in other developing nations. This visit aligns with SONNA’s commitment to providing its audience with diverse and global insights, fostering a deeper understanding of international affairs and partnerships.

“We are here to learn from Xinjiang’s experiences in economic development and social governance,” Mukhtar added. “The lessons learned and observations made during this tour will be invaluable in informing our coverage and enriching our understanding of global development models.”

The international media delegation’s visit to Xinjiang is expected to conclude with a series of reports and analyses from the participating media outlets, offering a fresh and firsthand perspective on a region of immense strategic and cultural importance. SONNA will continue to provide updates on Director Mukhtar’s engagements throughout the tour.
