NISA Issues Public Warning Against Financing Terrorism Disguised as “Zakat”

Mogadishu, (SONNA) – The National Intelligence and Security Agency of Somalia (NISA) has issued a strong warning to Somali citizens and business owners against participating in or contributing to funds extorted by terrorist groups under the guise of religious “Zakat” payments.

In an official statement, NISA revealed that it is closely monitoring the financial activities and assets of terrorist networks, with particular attention to the collection of what extremists refer to as “Zakat” — which in reality constitutes extortion and terrorist financing.

The agency warned that anyone found to be contributing to these payments will be held accountable under Somalia’s anti-terrorism laws as well as international regulations prohibiting the financing of terrorism. Offenders will face immediate legal action in accordance with national legislation and administrative decisions.

“Businesspeople and citizens must understand that providing funds to extremist groups is a serious criminal offense,” the statement said. “Security agencies urge the public to report any information or pressure related to such collections to the appropriate authorities without delay.”

NISA reaffirmed its commitment to combating the financial lifelines of extremist organizations and called on all Somalis to support national efforts in protecting the country’s peace and security.
