Algiers, Algeria – A high-level delegation from the Somali Ministry of Public Works, Reconstruction, and Housing is currently participating in the 44th Annual General Meeting of Shelter Afrique, a pivotal gathering being held in the vibrant city of Algiers, Algeria. The Somali representation at this significant four-day conference is spearheaded by the esteemed Minister of State for Public Works, Reconstruction, and Housing, Mr. Siciid Maxamed Maxamuud-Xayd.

The core agenda of this year’s Shelter Afrique meeting centers on critical discussions aimed at bolstering Africa’s self-reliance in the construction sector. A primary focus is placed on strategies to significantly reduce the continent’s dependence on imported construction materials, thereby promoting local industries, creating employment opportunities, and fostering economic resilience across African nations. Furthermore, the conference seeks to cultivate enhanced cooperation among African countries for the advancement of housing projects over the forthcoming five years, with Somalia poised to benefit from these collaborative initiatives.

Upon their arrival in Algiers, the Somali delegation received a warm and cordial reception, underscoring the strong diplomatic ties and collaborative spirit between Somalia and Algeria. They were graciously welcomed by the Director General of the Algerian Ministry of Public Works, alongside Somalia’s Ambassador to Algeria, Ambassador Yusuf Ahmed Hassan, widely known as Yusuf Jeego. This enthusiastic welcome set a positive tone for the delegation’s participation, emphasizing the shared commitment to addressing housing challenges and promoting sustainable development within the African continent.

Somalia’s engagement in this high-profile meeting reflects its proactive stance in seeking innovative and sustainable solutions for its housing and infrastructure needs. By actively participating in discussions on reducing reliance on external materials and forging stronger regional partnerships, the Ministry of Public Works, Reconstruction, and Housing is working towards a future where affordable and quality housing is accessible to more Somali citizens, aligning with broader national reconstruction and development goals. The insights and collaborations fostered at this meeting are expected to play a vital role in shaping the trajectory of housing and infrastructure development not just in Somalia, but across Africa.
