Somali Minister Meets Turkish President, to Strengthen Strategic Partnership on Ports and Security

ANKARA, Türkiye – The Minister of Ports and Maritime Transport of the Federal Government of Somalia, Mr. Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, held a high-level meeting with the President of Türkiye, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, today in Ankara. This pivotal engagement, conducted behind closed doors at the Presidential Palace, signifies a continued commitment to bolstering the strategic alliance between Somalia and Türkiye, with a particular focus on enhancing maritime capabilities and regional security.

Following the discussions, Minister Nur conveyed his deep appreciation for the warm reception extended by the Turkish head of state. “Today, I was received in his office by the President of the Republic of Türkiye, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. I would like to thank him for his warm welcome,” Minister Nur stated, emphasizing the cordial and productive nature of the diplomatic encounter.

While the specific details of the discussions were not immediately made public, the meeting is widely understood to be a further development in the comprehensive partnership that has flourished between Mogadishu and Ankara over the past decade. Türkiye has consistently played a vital role in Somalia’s reconstruction, humanitarian aid, and security sector reform since President Erdoğan’s groundbreaking visit in 2011.

The focus on ports and security aligns with recent significant agreements between the two nations. In February 2024, Somalia and Türkiye formalized a comprehensive Framework Agreement on Defense and Economic Cooperation. This landmark accord is designed to strengthen Somalia’s national defense, including its naval capabilities, and enhance maritime security in the strategically important waters off the Horn of Africa. For Somalia, which possesses the longest coastline in mainland Africa, the development and safeguarding of its maritime domain are paramount to its long-term economic prosperity and stability.

Minister Nur has frequently articulated Somalia’s vision to leverage its unique geostrategic position to become a major logistics and trade hub for East Africa and the broader Indian Ocean region. Turkish investment and expertise in port infrastructure development, maritime vocational training, and the modernization of port management are considered crucial elements in realizing this ambitious goal. The ongoing collaboration is designed to not only upgrade physical infrastructure but also to build the institutional capacity necessary for efficient and secure maritime operations.

This meeting between Minister Nur and President Erdoğan underscores the enduring commitment of both nations to their shared objectives. As Somalia continues on its path of recovery and state-building, the robust support from Türkiye in critical areas such as maritime security and port development is proving indispensable. The dialogue in Ankara is anticipated to pave the way for further collaborative initiatives, solidifying the strategic bond that contributes significantly to regional peace and economic growth.
