Mogadishu, SONNA – The Somali Petroleum Authority (SPA) has announced that it will release the official results of petroleum surveys conducted in various regions by July, marking a key milestone in Somalia’s path toward oil production. The update was delivered by the Chairman and CEO of SPA, Eng. Abdulkadir Aden Mohamud, who confirmed that Somalia is preparing to enter its first phase of oil extraction in collaboration with international partners.

Speaking to state media, Eng. Abdulkadir revealed that preparations are underway to begin oil production between the end of 2025 and early 2026. The process will be supported by the Government of Turkey, which is currently finalizing the deployment of a drilling ship.

“We are on track to begin oil production in the coming months. The petroleum data will be officially released in July, giving us a clearer understanding of the resource potential in the surveyed areas,” Eng. Abdulkadir stated.

In addition to offshore activity, the Chairman noted that promising onshore sites, particularly in the Lower Shabelle region, have undergone initial assessments. Full-scale operations in these areas will resume once the rainy season ends and conditions improve.

The Somali Petroleum Authority is also prioritizing the development of local capacity. Eng. Abdulkadir highlighted that a number of young Somali professionals have been sent abroad for technical training, equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to play leading roles in the country’s emerging oil and gas industry.

“We are preparing our young people to take ownership of Somalia’s natural resources. The goal is for Somali experts to eventually lead and manage the oil sector,” he emphasized.

With energy exploration gaining momentum, Somalia stands at a critical juncture in leveraging its natural resources to support economic growth, job creation, and national development. The SPA reiterated its commitment to transparency, environmental responsibility, and maximizing national benefit from petroleum activities.
