Mogadishu, (SONNA) – The Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Mohamed Abdi Hayir Maareeye, has officially inaugurated a new Laboratory Complex under the Somali Agricultural Regulatory and Inspection Services (SARIS).

Speaking during the launch, the Minister announced a new nationwide directive prohibiting the importation of agricultural seeds or pesticides into Somalia without prior inspection and approval from SARIS.

“From today onward, anyone who imports agricultural seeds or pesticides into the country without clearance from SARIS will be committing a crime and will be prosecuted under the law,” stated Minister Maareeye.

He emphasized that the new facility is part of the government’s broader efforts to improve the quality of agricultural inputs and safeguard Somali farmers, ultimately aiming to boost domestic crop production and food security.

The newly inaugurated Laboratory Complex consists of three key units:

  1. Pesticide Testing Laboratory:
This unit will examine the quality, safety, and environmental impact of pesticides used in agriculture. It plays a critical role in protecting both public health and the environment from harmful chemical substances.
  2. Seed Testing Laboratory:
Designed to ensure seed quality, this lab will verify that imported and local seeds are disease-free, well-suited to Somali agro-climatic conditions, and meet national standards. The facility directly supports Somali farmers by promoting reliable and productive seed varieties.
  3. (The third unit was not detailed in the original Somali text; please provide details if needed for completion.)

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing regulations and strengthening oversight mechanisms to ensure a safer and more productive agricultural sector.
