Geneva, (SONNA) – The Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mr. Mahamuud Moallim Abdulle, led a high-level delegation at the 8th Arab Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, held in Geneva, Switzerland. The Somali delegation included senior government representatives participating in discussions on strengthening regional and global cooperation in disaster risk reduction.

During the conference, Commissioner Mahamuud and his team held bilateral meetings with key international stakeholders, including:

  1. The Deputy Head of the World Bank and Director of the Bank’s Infrastructure Development Office,
  2. The Head of the Fund for Recovery from Loss and Damage (FRLD),
  3. The Director of the Anticipation Hub for global disaster preparedness,
  4. The Head of the Capacity for Disaster Reduction Initiative (CADRI),
  5. Representatives from UNDP, IOM, and FAO,
  6. The Leadership of the CIMA Foundation,
  7. Senior Officials from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO),
  8. And Representatives of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR).

The meetings focused on enhancing Somalia’s partnerships and collaboration in disaster risk reduction (DRR), particularly through technical support, resource mobilization, and institutional capacity-building.

International partners commended Somalia’s active role—especially through SoDMA—in advancing global disaster preparedness and its commitment to strengthening government resilience mechanisms. Commissioner Mahamuud emphasized the urgent need to accelerate the implementation of Somalia’s National Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy and called for continued international support to ensure its success.

Development partners pledged their commitment to assisting SoDMA in operationalizing this strategy and building national systems capable of reducing the impact of recurrent natural and man-made disasters.
