Mogadishu, Somalia (SONNA) – In a landmark development signaling significant political progress and the growing recovery of its governmental institutions, Somalia has for the first time secured a coveted seat on the Executive Board of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat). This historic achievement marks a new chapter for the nation’s engagement on critical global issues related to sustainable urbanization and human settlements.

The announcement came following a successful campaign by the Somali delegation, led by the Minister of Public Works, Reconstruction, and Housing, Dr. Elmi Mahamoud Nur. Somalia will now hold this important position on the Executive Board for a term of four years, beginning in 2025. This victory reflects a notable increase in international confidence in the ongoing efforts of the Somali government to rebuild and stabilize the nation after decades of conflict.

UN-Habitat is the United Nations agency responsible for promoting socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all. Its Executive Board plays a crucial role in overseeing the agency’s work, providing strategic guidance, and approving its programs and budget. Somalia’s direct participation in this high-level body will offer an unprecedented opportunity to influence global urban development policies and bring the unique perspectives and challenges of a post-conflict nation to the international forefront.

For Somalia, this membership is not merely a symbolic victory but holds profound practical implications. It provides a direct platform to:

  • Advocate for National Priorities: Somalia can now more effectively advocate for its specific needs related to urban planning, housing reconstruction, infrastructure development, and addressing internal displacement issues.
  • Access Expertise and Resources: The seat will facilitate enhanced access to UN-Habitat’s technical expertise, research, and potentially, greater financial resources and partnerships for sustainable urban development projects within the country.
  • Share Experiences: Somalia can share its valuable experiences in resilience, reconstruction, and managing rapid urbanization in challenging environments, contributing to the global discourse on sustainable development.
  • Enhance International Standing: The membership further solidifies Somalia’s re-engagement with the international community and its commitment to multilateralism, demonstrating its capacity to contribute to global governance beyond its immediate borders.

Minister Dr. Elmi Mahamoud Nur’s leadership in securing this position reflects Somalia’s dedicated efforts to address its urban challenges, which include rapid population growth, climate change impacts, and the need for organized resettlement of internally displaced persons. The country faces immense tasks in rebuilding its cities and towns, ensuring equitable access to basic services, and fostering inclusive economic opportunities.

This achievement comes as Somalia continues its journey of state-building and economic recovery. The international community’s endorsement, as evidenced by this election, signifies a recognition of the tangible progress being made in governance, security, and the rule of law. It also highlights the growing belief in Somalia’s potential to emerge as a stable and prosperous nation.

Somalia’s presence on the UN-Habitat Executive Board is expected to usher in a new era of collaboration, innovation, and accelerated progress in urban development, not just for Somalia, but potentially serving as an inspiring model for other nations facing similar challenges globally.
