Rebel RSF Shelling Hits Hospitals, Terrorizes Civilians in Sudan’s El Obeid

El Obeid, Sudan (SONNA) – May 30, 2025 – Hospitals and residential areas in El Obeid, a strategically vital city in southern Sudan, were subjected to intense artillery barrages on Thursday. The assaults, carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, reportedly struck critical civilian infrastructure, including medical facilities, in a continued campaign of terror against the populace.

An army source confirmed that the RSF militia launched indiscriminate artillery attacks on residential areas, with direct hits reported on the Social Insurance Hospital and the city’s army hospital. Witnesses in close proximity to the Social Insurance Hospital corroborated the bombardment of the medical facility, showing the militia’s disregard for civilian safety and international humanitarian law.

El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state, is approximately 400 kilometers southwest of Khartoum. It serves as a crucial staging post on the Sudanese army’s supply routes to the western regions, including Darfur. Although the Sudanese army successfully broke the RSF’s siege of the city in February, the rebel militia has persisted in its attacks on government and civilian positions within El Obeid.

The widespread aggression by the RSF militia, which began in April 2023, continues to devastate Sudan. The United Nations reports that the violence has led to tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of over 13 million people, creating one of the world’s most severe hunger and displacement crises. The RSF’s actions have effectively fragmented Sudan, with the army controlling central, eastern, and northern parts, while the militia and its allies dominate much of Darfur and areas of the south.

The deliberate targeting of healthcare facilities is a particularly alarming aspect of the RSF’s conduct in Sudan, further exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation and severely limiting access to essential medical services for affected populations. These continuous attacks by the RSF militia are terrorizing civilians and deepening the humanitarian catastrophe across the nation.
