A Nation in Resistance: Somalia’s Twin-Front War Against ISIS and al-Shabaab

In a pivotal moment for Somalia’s ongoing struggle against terrorism, both regional and federal forces have launched a formidable offensive against two of the country’s most dangerous extremist groups: ISIS-Somalia in the north and al-Shabaab in the central regions.
This coordinated effort represents a turning point in Somalia’s fight to reclaim its sovereignty, rid its land of terrorism, and secure a stable future for its citizens.

Marked by courage and sacrifice, these operations demonstrate Somalia’s unwavering determination to rebuild from years of conflict. Thanks to recent military victories, the unity of its people, and the backing of international partners, Somalia is proving that its future will be defined by resilience, strength, and national pride.

  1. The Context of Somalia’s Struggle Against Terrorism

Somalia’s fight against terrorism is rooted in a history shaped by political instability and external interference. Following the collapse of the Somali government in the early 1990s, extremist factions sought to exploit the power vacuum.

One of the most notorious groups, al-Shabaab, emerged in the mid-2000s, committing atrocities against innocent civilians and trying to impose extremist rule. In 2015, a splinter faction formed ISIS-Somalia in the north, pledging allegiance to foreign terrorists. Both groups, though different in networks, share the same evil aim: destabilizing Somalia and oppressing its people.

Today, Somalia’s government, together with brave regional forces and local communities, is standing firm against this threat, refusing to let its nation be defined by violence or extremism.

  1. Puntland’s Counter-ISIS Operations: A Strategic Push in the North

The battle against ISIS-Somalia in Puntland stands as a shining example of Somalia’s determination.
Puntland forces, with aerial support and intelligence from allies like the United States and Turkey, have launched successful offensives deep into the Al-Miskaad mountains — once considered safe havens for militants.

One major operation resulted in the elimination of 57 ISIS militants, striking a devastating blow to the group’s leadership and infrastructure. Under the leadership of Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni, the region’s forces have shown professionalism, courage, and resilience.

Despite facing dangers like IEDs planted by desperate militants, Puntland’s counter-terrorism units continue to sweep through the mountains and villages, liberating communities and restoring hope.

The sacrifices made — including brave sons of Puntland like the three brothers from the Qoryood family — will forever be honored as the cost of Somalia’s freedom and sovereignty.

  1. The Central Region: A Joint Fight Against Al-Shabaab

In Somalia’s central regions, the tide is turning against al-Shabaab.
Somali government forces, supported by local militias and international partners, have reclaimed key towns like El Buur and El Dheer — areas that had long suffered under the group’s brutal control.

In late 2024, a major offensive successfully liberated El Buur, reopening crucial roads and trade routes. Although militants tried cowardly tactics like suicide bombings, they were decisively repelled by the Somali National Army and their allies.

Attempts by extremists to launch scattered attacks have only highlighted their growing desperation. Somali forces, undeterred, are fortifying their newly secured territories, ensuring that extremist elements have no room to regroup or recover.

Today, Somalia’s central regions are witnessing a new dawn, as security improves and extremist threats diminish thanks to the bravery and determination of its people and security forces.

  1. The Role of Clan Militias: A Force for National Unity

Clan militias, once a source of division, are increasingly becoming vital allies in the national resistance against extremism. The Somali government has successfully mobilized communities to defend their land alongside national forces.

While al-Shabaab has tried to exploit clan grievances in areas like Galgaduud, the vast majority of Somali clans now stand united against terrorism.

Despite occasional disputes, the alliance between government forces and clan militias has proven crucial in expelling al-Shabaab from critical areas, demonstrating that when Somalis stand together, no extremist can defeat them.

  1. The Political Landscape: Unity for the Greater Good

Under President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Somalia is forging ahead with a renewed spirit of unity and determination. While political rivalries remain a challenge, the gravity of the national security threat has pushed many leaders toward cooperation.

Efforts to strengthen the coordination between federal and regional governments are bearing fruit, ensuring that military operations are more efficient and that victories against terrorism are consolidated. The government’s focus remains clear: securing every inch of Somali territory, promoting inclusive governance, and rebuilding a nation free from fear.

  1. International Support: Strengthening Somalia’s Fight

Somalia’s brave fight is backed by strong international partnerships.
The United States, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and African Union forces have provided crucial support — from airstrikes and intelligence sharing to troop training and logistical support.

Precision operations supported by U.S. surveillance have eliminated key ISIS operatives in Puntland, while Turkish-trained Somali special forces have played a vital role in ground operations.
African Union forces under ATMIS have also helped stabilize newly liberated areas, allowing communities to return to normal life.

Somalia’s victories are Somali-led, but these partnerships have been critical in accelerating progress and ensuring that extremist networks are dismantled before they can strike.

  1. The Missing Link: The Strategic Role of Jubaland

While major progress has been achieved in Puntland, Galmudug, and Hirshabelle, the southern region of Jubaland must fully join the national effort. Jubaland’s strategic position — especially the port city of Kismayo — makes it vital to cutting off al-Shabaab’s remaining supply lines.

Efforts are underway to bridge political divides and ensure that Jubaland is an active, full partner in the national counterterrorism strategy. Once fully engaged, Jubaland’s cooperation will strike a final, crushing blow to extremist remnants in the south.

  1. Conclusion: Toward a New Dawn in Somalia

Somalia today stands at the threshold of a new era — an era defined not by chaos or fear, but by resilience, unity, and hope. The recent victories against ISIS in Puntland and al-Shabaab in the central regions mark a critical turning point in the nation’s history.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s vision — built on robust defense, national reconciliation, and strategic international partnerships — is leading Somalia into a future where its people can live in peace, dignity, and prosperity.

The sacrifices of Somali soldiers, the steadfastness of local communities, and the determination of Somali leaders all point to one undeniable truth: Somalia is winning the fight against extremism.

While challenges remain, the Somali people have shown they will never again allow their country to be held hostage by terror.

From the mountains of Puntland to the plains of Galmudug, the message is clear: Somalia is rising, stronger and more united than ever before.

The winds of change are blowing across the Horn of Africa — and Somalia is at the forefront of that transformation, moving boldly toward peace, sovereignty, and national renewal.
