Mogadishu, Somalia (SONNA) – Somalia’s newly appointed Minister of Defense, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, pledged to personally lead the fight against Khawarij militants from the frontlines, reinforcing the government’s commitment to eradicating extremist threats.
“I will take charge of the national army’s operations to eliminate the Khawarij, working closely with military leadership while ensuring the rights and welfare of our soldiers are upheld,” Minister Fiqi stated. His remarks emphasized a hands-on approach to Somalia’s ongoing counterinsurgency campaign.
The ceremony was attended by outgoing Defense Minister Jabriil Abdirashid and State Minister of Defense Omar Ali Abdi, both of whom expressed confidence in Fiqi’s ability to steer the ministry. “We are handing over to a leader deeply experienced in both governance and the fight against Khawarij,” said former Minister Jabriil.
Officials emphasized the need to prioritize disabled veterans and active-duty troops, acknowledging past gaps in support for those wounded in defense of the nation. Minister Fiqi, a seasoned official with extensive security and administrative experience, is expected to enhance military capabilities and refine national defense strategies.
Fiqi’s appointment comes amid intensified military operations against al-Shabaab, with the Somali National Army (SNA) and allied forces making significant gains in recent months. His frontline leadership vow signals a more aggressive phase in the war against extremism.
