Mogadishu, Somalia |SONNA – In a precision nighttime operation, the Somali National Army (SNA) and U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) conducted a successful airstrike in the Aadan Yabaal district of Middle Shabelle, killing 12 Al-Shabaab militants, including senior leaders.
The strike, carried out late Wednesday, targeted a known militant gathering point and hideout used by the Khawaarij terrorist group (Al-Shabaab). Somali military officials confirmed the elimination of high-value operatives while emphasizing that no civilian casualties occurred.
“This operation demonstrates the effectiveness of our partnership with international allies in degrading terrorist networks,” said a Somali Ministry of Defense spokesperson. “We will continue to intensify strikes against Al-Shabaab to secure liberated regions.”
The joint mission reflects the Federal Government of Somalia’s escalated campaign against Al-Shabaab, which has sought to regain footholds in recently freed territories. AFRICOM, which provides intelligence and logistical support to Somali forces, stated that assessments of the strike’s impact are ongoing.
Residents in Aadan Yabaal reported hearing explosions followed by SNA ground operations to secure the area. “We’re relieved to see terrorists being held accountable,” said a local elder who requested anonymity for security reasons.
Since 2022, Somali forces, backed by U.S. airstrikes and African Union troops, have reclaimed significant territory from Al-Shabaab. However, the group remains capable of launching guerrilla attacks.
Authorities vow to maintain pressure, with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud declaring 2025 a “decisive year” for defeating the insurgency.
