Mogadishu, SONNA – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has appointed Ms. Jihaan Abdullahi Hassan as the President’s Senior Adviser on Defence. The announcement emphasizes the government’s commitment to advancing defense reforms and enhancing national security.
Ms. Jihaan brings a wealth of experience to her new role, having previously served as the Senior Adviser on Security and Military Reform in the Office of the President since August 2023. During her tenure, she played a pivotal role in the transition from the African Union Interim Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). Her efforts were instrumental in ensuring a smooth and effective transition, which is critical to Somalia’s long-term stability.
With over 13 years of direct experience in defense issues, Ms. Jihaan has been a key figure in shaping Somalia’s national security strategy. She was actively involved in the preparation and development of the 2023 national security plan, which outlines the country’s roadmap for addressing security challenges and achieving sustainable peace. Additionally, she contributed significantly to the reform of the Somali National Army between 2017 and 2020, laying the groundwork for a more professional and capable military force.
In 2019, Ms. Jihaan made history by becoming the first woman to be appointed Director General of the Ministry of Defense, a prove to her leadership skills and deep expertise in defense and national security. Her appointment as Senior Adviser on Defence marks another milestone in her distinguished career and reflects the government’s recognition of her contributions to the nation’s security sector.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has tasked Ms. Jihaan with leading efforts to reform and develop Somalia’s defense institutions.
