Somali Government introduces mandatory vaccines to all travellers

Mogadishu, (SONNA) – The Ministry of Health and Human Services of the Federal Government of Somalia is committed to safeguarding the health and well-being of its citizens and visitors. In light of the global rise in pandemics and in compliance with International Health Regulations (IHR 2005), the Ministry of Health and Human Services is introducing a mandatory Yellow Fever Vaccine, Oral Poliomyelitis Vaccine and Quadrivalent Neisseria Meningitis Vaccine Requirement for all travelers entering or leaving the country, effective to lst up to 10th Feb 2025.

Yellow fever is a potentially fatal mosquito-borne disease that poses a significant public health risk. Vaccination remains the most effective measure to prevent infection and reduce its spread across borders. The introduction of this requirement aligns with our efforts to strengthen disease prevention and control measures.

Key Guidelines for Travelers:

  1. Mandatory Vaccination Certificate: All travelers, regardless of nationality or age, must present a valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate upon arrival or departure.
  2. Vaccination Timing: Travelers are advised to receive the vaccine at least 10 days before travel to ensure immunity.
  3. Designated Vaccination Centers: The vaccine is available at approved Somalia international ports of entry (Airports/sea ports) and Public Hospital facilities.
  4. Exemptions: Medical exemptions will be granted for individuals with conditions that prevent vaccination. However, an official medical waiver must be presented.
  5. Travelers who fail to present a valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate will be subject to screening, quarantine, or denial of entry based on public health protocols.

The Ministry of Health and Human Services urges all travelers to prioritize their health and that of others by complying with this directive. Together, we can prevent the spread of yellow fever and ensure the safety of global travel.
