Somalia expresses deep concerns over worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza at the UNSC

New York, (SONNA) – The Federal Republic of Somalia has expressed deep concern over the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, urging the international community to take immediate and comprehensive action to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people.

In a statement delivered by H.E Amb. Ahmed Moallim Fiqi at the UNSC during a high-level meeting, Somalia commended Algeria for organizing the session and praised the contributions of Qatar, Egypt, and the United States in mediating a ceasefire. Somali officials highlighted that the recent escalation in Gaza has resulted in the tragic loss of thousands of innocent lives and widespread destruction of critical infrastructure, including hospitals and schools.

“The dire situation in Gaza demands a collective ethical and international responsibility to protect the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people,” the statement emphasized.

Somalia also underscored the importance of addressing the root causes of the conflict, including lifting the blockade on Gaza and ending the Israeli occupation. The Somali government reiterated the need for a comprehensive rebuilding plan that invests in local communities and ensures long-term social and economic stability.

In addition, Somalia called for unimpeded access to humanitarian aid and reaffirmed its support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). The agency plays a critical role in providing essential services to millions of Palestinian refugees, a mandate Somalia deemed “non-negotiable.”

Somalia concluded by reiterating its unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people and calling for a just and lasting peace based on international law and the Arab Peace Initiative. The statement stressed that establishing a sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital is key to achieving stability and dignity for the region.

The Somali government urged all parties to work towards sustainable solutions and to avoid unilateral actions that could exacerbate the humanitarian situation.
