Paris, (SONNA) – The State Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E Ali Mohamed Omar was welcomed by Mr. Thani Mohamed-Soilihi, French State Minister for Francophonie and International Partnerships in Paris. The discussions marked a significant milestone in strengthening the long-standing partnership between Somalia and France.

During the meeting, the two ministers underscored their shared commitment to advancing Somalia’s sovereignty, stability, and prosperity while exploring new avenues for collaboration across multiple sectors.
H.E. Mohamed-Soilihi congratulated Somalia on its recent election to the United Nations Security Council, describing it as a landmark achievement. “We look forward to close collaboration with Somalia during its tenure on the Security Council to address global challenges and reinforce our shared priorities,” he stated.

The two ministers focused their discussions on five key areas: Security and Stability, Diaspora and Migration, Economic Cooperation, Diplomatic Relations, and Commitments and the Way Forward. These topics underscored their shared dedication to fostering closer ties and addressing mutual priorities.
France reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Somalia’s counterterrorism efforts and enhancing maritime security, recognizing Somalia’s pivotal role in fostering peace and stability in the Horn of Africa. Somalia’s State Minister expressed appreciation for France’s contributions through the European Union, particularly its support for the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). He also requested France to support the new African Union Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

Acknowledging the challenges posed by migration, the ministers addressed the urgency of responding to recent incidents, including the tragic loss of Somali lives off Madagascar’s coast during attempts to reach Mayotte. France proposed an administrative agreement to strengthen cooperation on migration management, emphasizing the need for robust mechanisms to combat illegal trafficking and enhance humanitarian support.

The discussions highlighted Somalia’s potential as a destination for foreign investment, with particular interest from France in infrastructure, fisheries, and hydrocarbon exploration. Historical engagements by French companies, such as Total, were noted, and plans to rejuvenate such partnerships were explored.
France expressed interest in reopening its embassy in Mogadishu to facilitate deeper diplomatic and economic ties. The Somali delegation warmly welcomed this initiative, emphasizing Somalia’s openness to increased engagement with French enterprises and institutions.

Both ministers reaffirmed the critical role of Somalia’s stability in maintaining peace across the Horn of Africa. France reiterated its steadfast support for Somalia in addressing regional tensions, particularly concerning neighboring states.

The meeting concluded with both parties pledging to deepen bilateral cooperation and expedite efforts to explore mutual opportunities.

“This meeting underscores the strength of our partnership and our shared vision for a stable and prosperous Somalia,” said State Minister Mohamed-Soilihi.

Echoing this sentiment, State Minister Ali Omar added, “We are confident that today’s dialogue will pave the way for a new chapter in Somalia-France relations, fostering greater collaboration for the benefit of both nations.”
