Mogadishu (SONNA) – The Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mr. Hamsa Abdi Barre, is set to lead a high-level delegation to New York City this week to participate in the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

This year’s General Assembly session, themed “Leaving No One Behind,” focuses on global cooperation to promote peace, ensure sustainable development, and protect human dignity for both present and future generations. The agenda is packed with critical discussions and initiatives aimed at addressing some of the most pressing issues facing the world today.

Prime Minister Barre is expected to highlight the pivotal role of the African continent in shaping international agendas. His address will emphasize the importance of unity and diversity as foundational principles for achieving peace and sustainable development. He will also emphasize Somalia’s commitment to international collaboration and its active role in global discussions aimed at fostering a more inclusive and equitable world.

Key Agenda Items at the 79th UN General Assembly:

  1. Climate Action and Sustainability: World leaders will discuss strategies to combat climate change, focusing on reducing carbon emissions, promoting renewable energy, and ensuring sustainable development practices. The goal is to create a resilient future that can withstand environmental challenges.
  2. Global Health and Pandemic Preparedness: In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be a strong emphasis on strengthening global health systems, ensuring equitable access to vaccines, and preparing for future health crises. This includes discussions on improving healthcare infrastructure and addressing health disparities.
  3. Peace and Security: The assembly will address ongoing conflicts and security challenges around the world. Leaders will explore ways to promote peace, prevent conflicts, and support post-conflict recovery efforts. This includes discussions on disarmament, counter-terrorism, and peacekeeping missions.
  4. Economic Recovery and Inequality: With the global economy still recovering from the impacts of the pandemic, there will be a focus on strategies to boost economic growth, reduce inequality, and support vulnerable populations. This includes discussions on job creation, social protection, and economic resilience.
  5. Human Rights and Social Justice: Ensuring the protection of human rights and promoting social justice will be key topics. Leaders will discuss ways to combat discrimination, protect the rights of marginalized groups, and promote gender equality and women’s empowerment.
  6. Digital Transformation and Innovation: The assembly will explore the role of digital technologies in driving development and innovation. This includes discussions on bridging the digital divide, promoting digital literacy, and leveraging technology for sustainable development.

Prime Minister Barre’s participation in these discussions highlights Somalia’s dedication to contributing to global solutions and its commitment to the principles of the United Nations. The Somali delegation’s presence at the General Assembly is an indication to the country’s active engagement in international affairs and its efforts to promote peace, development, and human dignity on a global scale.
