Federal Government of Somalia’s Weekly Briefing

Mogadishu, Thursday, 22nd February, 2024

 

  1. The Cabinet and the Federal Parliament of Somalia have approved the historic defense and economic agreement that the Federal Government of Somalia entered into with the Republic of Turkiye.
  2. The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces His Excellency Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said that the agreement between Somalia and Turkiye endorsed by the national councils is important for the defense of the sea and the growth of the country’s economy.
  3. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said that the agreement between Somalia and Turkiye is not an antagonism towards the neighboring countries, but it is one that serves the security interests of Somalia.
  4. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has officially signed the Defence and the Economic Agreement between Somali and Turkiye.
  5. The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud participated in the 37th Summit of the African Union, where he also held meaningful talks with other leaders and diplomats.
  6. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud who was talking to students who won PhD scholarships including in marine science, urged them to take advantage of this precious opportunity that could be the key to making better use of our marine resources.
  7. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud received a special written message from the Secretary General of the Arab League.
  8. The Federal Parliament of Somalia concluded the debate on Chapter 1 of the Constitution Review.
  9. The Speaker of the House of the People, His Excellency Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur (Madobe) has attended the launch of a program to improve the rights of workers and workplaces.
  10. Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre thanked the Cabinet for approving the historic defense and economic agreement between Somalia and Turkiye.
  11. Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre has held important meetings with the Speakers of the two chambers of the Federal Parliament of Somalia.
  12. Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre has been briefed on the development and work of the country’s air space services and management by the Ministry of Transport as well as the Civil Aviation Authority.
  13. The Minister of Information of Somalia Mr. Daud Aweis Jama said that the historic agreement between Somalia and Turkiye strengthens the efforts of the Federal Government of Somalia to defend and preserve the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country.
  14. The Federal Government of Somalia has strongly condemned the failed attempt by the Ethiopian Government which wanted to prevent President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his delegation from participating in the 37th African Union Summit which was recently concluded in Addis Ababa.
  15. In its final communique, the 37th Summit of the African Union has strongly discussed the importance of preserving the sovereignty and the independence of African countries, and Ethiopia’s desire to violate the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of Somalia.
  16. Somalia’s Minister of Information Mr. Daud Aweis Jama said that Ethiopia’s violation of Somali waters could further encourage terrorism in the region which is a threat to international peace.
  17. Somalia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Abukar Dahir Osman, who gave a speech at a meeting of the Security Council on the situation in Somalia, said that Ethiopia is still carrying out violations and actions that could threaten security in the region.
  18. The African Union agreed that Somalia should be the sole candidate in East Africa for one of the non-permanent seats in the United Nations Security Council.
  19. Somalia and Uganda have signed a memorandum of understanding in Mogadishu on defense cooperation.
  20. The Civil Aviation Authority has accused the administration of Hargeisa in the northern regions of taking actions to disrupt the management and the safety of the air space.
  21. The Minister of Education Farah Sheikh Abdulqadir said that the Federal Government of Somalia plans to increase the number of teachers to 10,000 by 2025.
  22. The Ministers of Finance at the federal and state levels held a meeting on the fiscal federalism in Mogadishu.
  23. The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs of Somalia Hassan Macallin Mohamud has participated in a townhall meeting to discuss the review and the completion of the draft constitution.
  24. The Minister of Trade and Industry of Somalia Mr. Jibril Abdirashid Haji received in Mogadishu Kuwaiti businessmen who came to seek investment opportunities in Somalia.
  25. The Ministry of Religious Affairs held a meeting in Mogadishu to discuss the fight against extremist ideologies.
  26. The Minister of Interior, Ahmed Macallin Fiqi, received the Ambassador of the Arab League to Somalia, Abdullahi Bin Mutlaq, while discussing the relations and cooperation between the two sides.
  27. The Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ali Mohamed Omar, had a meeting with the Secretary General of the African Union Free Trade Area (AFCTFA) in Addis Ababa.
  28. The Minister of Finance of Somalia Mr. Bihi Iman Ige has participated in the 131st meeting of Finance Ministers of Arab countries in Cairo.
  29. The consultation meeting of the ministries of labor at the federal and state levels was concluded in Mogadishu, and the issued discussed include development of vocational education and vocational trainings.
  30. The Commander of the Somali Armed Forces Major General Ibrahim Sheikh Muhuddin visited some military training colleges in Qatar, where some officers of the Somali Armed Forces are being trained.
  31. The Commander of the Somali National Army Major General Ibrahim Sheikh Muhuddin held a meeting with the Commander of the Qatari Armed Forces General Salem Bin Hamad Al Aqeel in Doha.
  32. The Somali National Army with the help of international friends killed 7 terrorists belonging to the Kharijites Al Shabab, after a military operation in Kurtun Warey district in the Lower Shabelle region.
  33. The Somalu National Army with the support of the people attacked a base of the Kharijites al-Shabab in the Ali Yabal area of ​​El Dheer district.
  34. The Somali National Army, with the help of the people, have arrested Said Ali Gacamey, who was causing problems to the people living in El Dheer and Galcad districts in central Somalia.
  35. The United Nations has hailed the progress Somalia is making in terms of security, politics and state building.
  36. The Somali Police Force has arrested six people for interrogation following the death of an officer of the Civil Aviation Authority whose name is Abdinasir Muse Abdirahman.
  37. The security forces have intercepted a bag containing explosives intended to harm the people of Mogadishu.
