The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) and the United Nations (UN) held a meeting today to discuss their collaboration on humanitarian issues and the El-Niño crisis in Somalia.
The meeting was chaired by Mr. Mohamud Maallim Abdulle, the Chairman of SoDMA, and Mr. George Conway, the Deputy Envoy of the Secretary General of the UN in Somalia and the Humanitarian Aid Coordinator.
The two sides agreed to have full cooperation between SoDMA and UN agencies, especially those working on humanitarian issues, such as food security, health, water, sanitation, and protection.
They also discussed the crisis caused by El-Niño, which has triggered severe flooding in some parts of the country, displacing thousands of people and destroying crops and infrastructure.
They reviewed the lessons learned from the previous El-Niño events and how to prevent and mitigate the impact of the current one.
They stressed the importance of ensuring that the aid grants have been delivered to the intended people and that the UN supports SoDMA and other government agencies in their efforts to respond to the emergency and build resilience.
The meeting was attended by Directors and Senior Advisors of SoDMA, as well as representatives from various UN agencies.
