MOGADISHU, SONNA – A prominent Somali politician has criticized Ethiopia for hosting the African Union headquarters while undermining Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Abdirahman Abdishakur warsame, a former Planning Minister and current MP, took to X (formerly known as Twitter) on Thursday to slam Ethiopia’s role as the host country for the continental organization.
He said that Ethiopia’s actions were in “contradiction” and “disregard” of the AU charter, which he said was based on the “fundamental principles” of respecting the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of member states.
He also voiced his support for the idea of relocating the AU headquarters to another country that would “uphold and respect” the organization’s core values. He argued that this would enhance the security, peace, and stability of the region.
The AU headquarters, which is located in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, has been hosting the organization since 1963.
