Mogadishu – In a significant diplomatic meeting held in Washington yesterday, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud engaged in talks with Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the United States Representative to the United Nations. The discussions focused on bolstering bilateral cooperation between the United States and Somalia, with particular emphasis on national reconciliation, security, and humanitarian aid.

During the meeting, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield commended President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for his unwavering commitment to national reconciliation efforts and the progress made in combating the al-Shabaab insurgency. The United States affirmed its dedicated support to the Federal Government of Somalia’s goal of achieving security transition by December 2024.

Recognizing the urgent issue of food insecurity in Somalia, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield emphasized the enduring commitment of the United States to address this critical challenge. She highlighted the generous pledge of nearly $524 million in additional humanitarian assistance made by the United States during the UN’s “High-level Pledging Event to Support the Humanitarian Response in the Horn of Africa” held in May. This substantial commitment is expected to play a crucial role in alleviating the impact of the ongoing drought crisis in the Horn of Africa.

The meeting between President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield signifies the deepening of ties between the United States and Somalia. It underscores the mutual understanding and shared vision to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in Somalia. The United States has been a key partner in Somalia’s journey towards rebuilding its institutions and ensuring a secure and prosperous future for its people.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud expressed his appreciation for the United States’ unwavering support in Somalia’s efforts to establish lasting peace and security. He highlighted the importance of international collaboration and partnership in achieving these goals, recognizing the United States as a crucial ally in this endeavor.

The President reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to the ongoing national reconciliation process and the fight against al-Shabaab. He emphasized the need for continued support from the United States and the international community to counter the threat of terrorism and extremism, which has been a persistent challenge in Somalia.

Moreover, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud acknowledged the critical role played by the United States in addressing the severe humanitarian crisis caused by the drought in the Horn of Africa. He expressed his gratitude for the substantial financial assistance pledged by the United States, which will significantly contribute to alleviating the suffering of vulnerable populations affected by the drought.

The meeting between President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield has reinvigorated the partnership between Somalia and the United States. It signifies a renewed commitment to cooperation, underscoring the shared objectives of promoting peace, stability, and development in Somalia. The ongoing support from the United States is expected to contribute significantly to Somalia’s progress on multiple fronts, including security, humanitarian aid, and sustainable development.
