Internal Tensions Plague Al-Shabaab: The Effect on Somalia’s Security

Al Shabaab is a notorious terrorist organization that has dominated various parts of Somalia for the past 15 years. This group has been responsible for a significant number of acts of terror and violence, including the killing of innocent civilians and the destabilization of the country. Despite its reputation as a unified and ruthless force, there is evidence that the group is not immune to the same internal conflicts and corruption that afflict many other criminal organizations.

One such event took place in Buq Aqable, near Bula-burte in Hiiraan, where Commander Abdikarim Yusuf Ahmed was killed along with his bodyguards. The conflict arose over the issue of hostages who were abducted from Beledweyne in Hiiraan, with Commander Abdikarim advocating for their release while other group fighters opposed it. This infighting resulted in the death of eight members and heightened tensions in the area.

In another instance, on December 31, 2022, at least 7 Al-Shabaab militants were killed and others were injured in Amara, under Haradhere in Mudug. The conflict was between two wings of Al-Shabaab, with one side intending to surrender to SNA forces and the other against it. The infighting lasted for over an hour.

These incidents of infighting within Al-Shabaab are not isolated, but rather a reflection of the growing tensions and conflicts within the group. The factors driving these tensions include greed, nepotism, and disputes over power and resources, leading to a weakened and divided group that is increasingly vulnerable to attacks from government forces and security actors.

One of the reasons for these internal conflicts is the lack of trust in the promises made by the terror organization. Members have realized that the group kills those who are deemed no longer useful, leading them to question the validity of the promises made by the organization. This further undermines the unity and effectiveness of the group.

Deputy Minister of Information of Somalia, Abdirahman Yusuf Adala, commented on the situation, saying “Signs of a defeated group are reported among the terrorists. Conflicts, disobedience, lack of cooperation, and distrust among them.”

In conclusion, the internal conflicts within Al-Shabaab are having serious implications for the security of Somalia. The group’s unity and effectiveness are being undermined, making it more susceptible to attack and less capable of carrying out its operations. Addressing the root causes of violence and the internal dynamics of terror organizations like Al-Shabaab requires a comprehensive and multi-faceted approach to effectively combat terrorism in Somalia.
