Mogadishu – Voter registration officially began this morning in the Wadajir and Dharkeynley districts of Banadir Region, marking a key step in preparations for the upcoming local council elections scheduled for early June.
Hundreds of residents turned out at registration centers in the early hours, forming long queues to ensure they are eligible to participate in the landmark vote.
Local district commissioners welcomed the public’s enthusiasm, encouraging all eligible citizens to register and take part in choosing their local leaders.
Many residents expressed their excitement at being part of a democratic process after more than 50 years without local elections, calling the moment historic and a significant milestone for Somalia’s political development.
The return of constitutionally guaranteed voting rights is widely seen as a major achievement for the Somali people, who have long awaited the opportunity to elect their representatives.
