Mogadishu, Somalia – Ms. Sandra Lattouf, the newly appointed UNICEF Representative for Somalia, officially commenced her role by presenting her letters of credence. The ceremony, held today, July 31, 2025, in Mogadishu, was attended by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Isaak Mohamud Mursal.
Ms. Lattouf brings a wealth of experience to her new position, having dedicated nearly three decades to the UN and NGO sectors. Her appointment comes at a crucial time as Somalia continues to address multifaceted challenges impacting its children, from climate-related crises to ongoing development needs. In her remarks following the presentation, Ms. Lattouf expressed her eagerness to contribute to the nation’s progress. “I look forward to building on the advances that have been made in improving the lives of children,” she stated. “UNICEF will continue to support the Government to fulfill its development aspirations through the National Transformation Plan. My coming to Somalia is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.”
Before assuming her role in Somalia, Ms. Lattouf served as the UNICEF Representative in Iraq from 2023 to 2025. Her career with UNICEF has seen her hold similar high-level capacities in Burkina Faso and The Gambia, and she has also served in headquarters in New York and in field offices across Haiti, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Her professional journey also includes work with the international NGO Solidarités in Burundi, the DRC, and France, showcasing a diverse and deep understanding of humanitarian and development work in varied contexts.
A national of Lebanon, Ms. Lattouf’s impressive academic background complements her extensive field experience. She holds an advanced degree in Nutrition and Food Security from the University of Montpellier, France, a master’s degree in Biochemistry, and a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Sciences and Techniques in Tours, France. Her specialized knowledge is expected to be a valuable asset in addressing the unique health and nutrition challenges faced by children in Somalia.
The official accreditation of Ms. Lattouf solidifies UNICEF’s renewed commitment to its partnership with the Somali government. The collaboration is poised to focus on key areas outlined in the National Transformation Plan, including child health, education, nutrition, and protection, with the goal of creating a more stable and prosperous future for the nation’s youth.
