BAIDOA, Somalia – The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management of the Southwest State of Somalia has officially declared a humanitarian emergency across its regions following a comprehensive assessment of the deteriorating conditions on the ground. The administration warned that the situation has reached a critical level, requiring urgent intervention to save lives.
According to the data released by the Ministry, approximately 621,000 people residing within the Southwest State are currently in need of immediate humanitarian assistance. The report highlighted a particularly alarming statistic regarding the most vulnerable demographic, revealing that 134,970 children under the age of five are facing severe malnutrition due to the worsening food insecurity.
The Ministry attributed this crisis to the failure of seasonal rains, which has severely impacted agricultural production and depleted essential water sources throughout the region. The scarcity of water has forced rural communities to migrate over long distances in search of sustenance, disrupting livelihoods and placing immense pressure on already limited resources.
In light of these findings, the Southwest State administration has issued an urgent appeal to the Federal Government of Somalia and international partners to mobilize rapid support. The declaration seeks to accelerate the delivery of life-saving aid to the affected populations to prevent the situation from escalating into a famine.
