Mogadishu, SONNA – Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre joined residents of the capital for a mass iftar at Bakara Market this evening. The event, attended by hundreds of citizens, showed the significant strides made in restoring safety and stability to the city, which was once a hotspot for violence and instability.

During the iftar, Prime Minister Hamsa praised the Somali government’s efforts in securing the capital, emphasizing the substantial investments made to ensure the safety of Mogadishu’s residents. He expressed gratitude to the people of Mogadishu for their cooperation with security agencies, which has been instrumental in creating an environment where such public gatherings can take place.

“The Somali government has invested heavily in ensuring security in the capital,” the Prime Minister said. “Tonight, we are breaking our fast in Bakara Market, a place that was once inaccessible due to insecurity. This is a prove to the hard work of our security forces and the resilience of our people.”

The mass iftar at Bakara Market, a historic and bustling commercial hub, symbolized the return of normalcy to Mogadishu. The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of such events in fostering community spirit and showcasing the progress achieved in the fight against extremism.

In addition to discussing security improvements, Prime Minister Hamsa reiterated the government’s commitment to advancing democratic processes in Somalia. He noted that the government is actively working to hold local government elections and implement a one-person, one-vote electoral system across the country.

“The Somali government is engaged in holding local government elections and, in general, implementing one-person, one-vote elections in the country,” he stated. “This will allow the people to choose their leaders and hold them accountable, which is a constitutional right of the Somali people.”

The Prime Minister’s remarks reflect the government’s dedication to ensuring transparency, inclusivity, and democratic governance in Somalia. The implementation of a one-person, one-vote system is seen as a critical step toward strengthening the country’s political institutions and empowering its citizens.

The mass iftar at Bakara Market not only celebrated the holy month of Ramadan but also served as a reminder of the progress made in securing Mogadishu and the ongoing efforts to build a stable and democratic Somalia.
