Somalia’s National Security Advisor Outlines Ambitious Plan for ATMIS Withdrawal

Somalia’s National Security Advisor, Hussein Sheikh-Ali, recently announced plans for the government to be fully prepared by December 31st, 2024. With only 18 months left before the withdrawal of ATMIS, they have set a timer and are focusing on several key areas.

One of the main priorities is defeating Al-Shabaab and liberating the country. This terrorist group has been a major threat to Somalia’s stability and security for years. The plan to defeat them will likely involve both military and non-military measures.

Another priority is strengthening and increasing the size of the Somali army. This will be crucial in maintaining security and stability after the withdrawal of ATMIS. According to Sheikh-Ali, speaking at the Dood Furan Program (Open Discussion Program), 10,000 soldiers have already been trained this year. The government will likely continue to invest in training and equipping its soldiers.

The government is also seeking to have the arms embargo lifted. This has been in place for many years and has limited their ability to acquire weapons and military equipment. Lifting it would allow them to better equip their army and more effectively fight against Al-Shabaab.

Finally, they are focusing on promoting good governance and transparency. This will be crucial in building trust with the Somali people and ensuring that the country continues to move forward on a positive path.

Overall, Sheikh-Ali has outlined an ambitious plan for the next 18 months. It remains to be seen if all these goals can be achieved, but it is clear that the government is determined to make progress and prepare for a future without ATMIS.
