Mogadishu, SONNA – The Federal Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs hosted a landmark symposium today, uniting government officials, civil society leaders, and Islamic scholars to formulate a national strategy harnessing family values for conflict resolution. Director General Ibrahim Adan Nadaara opened the proceedings by outlining the ministry’s vision to “make every Somali household a microcosm of peace through Quranic teachings.”
Prominent scholar Fadumo Sheikh Ali presented research demonstrating how traditional Somali family structures historically prevented communal violence, proposing their revival through modern Islamic education programs. The meeting produced concrete recommendations including the training of 500 “Family Peace Ambassadors” and the integration of conflict mediation modules into madrasa curricula.
This initiative marks a strategic shift in Somalia’s peacebuilding approach, moving beyond political reconciliation to address social fragmentation at its roots. The Ministry announced plans to establish regional family counseling centers, with the first pilot locations selected in conflict-affected areas of Mogadishu, Baidoa, and Garowe.
