Somalia’s Immigration and Citizenship Agency (ICA) Launches New E-Visa System to Modernize Immigration and Boost Security

Mogadishu, Somalia – The Somali Immigration and Citizenship Agency (ICA) has officially launched a new E-Visa/eTAS service, marking a significant step in the nation’s efforts to modernize its immigration procedures. The new system, which will become mandatory for all foreign arrivals starting September 1, 2025, positions Somalia alongside other nations that have adopted advanced electronic visa technology.

The new service can be accessed and applied for electronically through the ICA’s official website, www.evisa.gov.so. According to Mr. Isaaq Hassan Taakow, Director of Foreigners and Immigration, the system has been under development for an extended period to ensure a seamless and efficient process. “This modern system will make it easier for foreigners to apply for a visa from anywhere in the world and receive it within a short time,” said Mr. Taakow, who added that dedicated staff have been trained to handle applications with speed and transparency.

Mr. Mustafa Duhulow, the Director-General of the ICA, hailed the launch as a historic stride for Somalia. He emphasized that the new system showcases the country’s readiness to align with modern international standards. The e-Visa initiative is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening national security, protecting data, stimulating economic growth, and streamlining travel services.

Minister of Internal Security, Mr. Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartaag, affirmed that the e-Visa system will be the sole method of entry for foreigners as of September 1. The Minister highlighted the system’s importance for monitoring who enters the country and ensuring financial accountability. All visa fees, he noted, will be directly deposited into the Ministry of Finance’s accounts, enhancing the transparency and efficiency of revenue collection.

The ICA also clarified that certain groups will be exempt from the eTAS requirements. This includes individuals holding multiple-entry visas or residency permits, diplomats, UNLP passport holders, and citizens from countries that have existing free movement agreements with Somalia. The new e-Visa system is a significant move forward, symbolizing Somalia’s commitment to both security and economic development.
