Geneva, Switzerland – SONNA – The Minister of Health and Social Welfare of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Dr. Ali Haaji Aden, along with the Director General of the Ministry, Dr. Guuleed Abdijaliil, held a high-level meeting with the leadership of GAVI, the global vaccine alliance, in Geneva, Switzerland. The discussions focused on enhancing collaboration to expand vaccine access across Somalia, particularly in regions recently liberated from Khawarij (Al-Shabaab) control.
During the meeting, the two parties explored ways to increase GAVI’s vaccine donations to ensure nationwide coverage and strengthen Somalia’s healthcare system. Key topics included leveraging Somalia’s financial systems to streamline the allocation of vaccine funds directly to the Ministry of Health, ensuring transparency and efficiency in the distribution process.
Dr. Ali Haaji Aden emphasized the importance of the partnership, stating, “This collaboration with GAVI is critical to improving healthcare access for all Somalis, especially in newly liberated areas. Vaccines are a cornerstone of public health, and we are committed to ensuring they reach every corner of our country.”
The Somali delegation is in Geneva to participate in the World Health Organization (WHO) Executive Board meeting, where global health leaders are discussing strategies to advance healthcare systems and improve health outcomes worldwide. During the event, the Somali delegation engaged in bilateral discussions with other participating countries and organizations, advocating for Somalia’s health development agenda on the global stage.
The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare reaffirmed its commitment to representing Somalia’s healthcare priorities in international forums and securing partnerships that support the country’s efforts to rebuild its health infrastructure.
