Bangkok, Thailand – Somalia has reaffirmed its commitment to combating illegal fishing activities within its territorial waters. Mr. Abdi Diirshe, the Director General of the Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy of the Federal Government of Somalia, presented a comprehensive report at the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) regional meeting held in Bangkok, Thailand.
The report highlighted the ongoing efforts and strategies implemented by the Somali government to curb illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, which poses a serious threat to the sustainability of fish stocks and the economic well-being of coastal communities.
Mr. Diirshe emphasized the ministry’s dedication to safeguarding the Blue Economy, which is vital for the nation’s development. He outlined the collaborative measures being taken in partnership with international bodies to enhance surveillance and enforcement capabilities.
