Mogadishu, Somalia –  The Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation of the Federal Government of Somalia, Mohamed Abdi Hayir (Maareeye), has delivered on a previous commitment to support the country’s farming community in a move aimed at revitalizing the nation’s agricultural sector and empowering local farmers. The initiative, carried out in collaboration with the Qatar Charity organization, saw the distribution of essential equipment to farmers, including those utilizing modern agricultural techniques.

The donation package included 40 cargo motorcycles, which will be used to transport produce from farms to markets more efficiently. In addition, 40 grain processing machines were provided to assist with the husking and preparation of corn and other grains. This equipment is expected to significantly enhance productivity and reduce manual labor for farmers.

During the handover ceremony, Minister Maareeye spoke directly to the recipients, urging them to embrace self-reliance and play a pivotal role in increasing agricultural output. He emphasized that a strong domestic agricultural sector is vital for boosting the national economy and combating poverty. The minister also highlighted the critical need for a new generation of dynamic, forward-thinking young farmers who can adapt to global advancements and integrate modern technologies, such as greenhouses, into their practices.

This partnership with Qatar Charity showsthe government’s strategic focus on strengthening key economic pillars. By providing tangible resources and encouraging innovation, the Ministry of Agriculture is working to create a more resilient food supply chain and pave the way for a more prosperous future for Somali farmers. The initiative is a reflection of the government’s broader efforts to improve the livelihoods of its citizens and foster sustainable economic growth.
