Rome, SONNA – The Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation of the Federal Government of Somalia, Mr. Mohamed Abdi Xayir Maareeye, led a delegation to the World Agriculture Conference in Rome, Italy. The conference, which brought together representatives from over 170 countries, focused on global agricultural and rural development initiatives.

During the conference, Somalia made significant strides by paying its annual allocation to the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). This contribution has enabled the country to secure funding for key agricultural development projects, including the Rural Livelihoods Development Project (RLDP). The RLDP aims to enhance rural livelihoods, improve food security, and promote sustainable agricultural practices across Somalia.

Minister Maareeye emphasized the importance of the conference for Somalia’s agricultural sector, stating, “This event provided a valuable platform to showcase Somalia’s potential in agriculture and secure partnerships that will drive our development agenda. The projects we have secured will play a crucial role in transforming rural communities and boosting our economy.”

In addition to participating in the conference, Minister Maareeye held bilateral meetings with other global leaders and stakeholders. He presented investment opportunities in Somalia’s agricultural sector, highlighting the country’s fertile land, untapped resources, and potential for growth. These discussions aimed to attract international investors and foster collaborations that will support Somalia’s agricultural development.

The World Agriculture Conference served as a critical opportunity for Somalia to engage with the global community and advocate for support in rebuilding its agricultural sector. The government’s commitment to paying its IFAD allocation and securing development projects reflects its dedication to addressing food insecurity and promoting economic growth through agriculture.

As Somalia continues to recover from decades of conflict, initiatives like the RLDP are expected to have a transformative impact on rural communities, empowering farmers, creating jobs, and improving livelihoods. The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation remains focused on leveraging international partnerships to achieve sustainable development and food security for all Somalis.
