Mogadishu, SONNA — Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia has welcomed the decision of the East African Court of Appeal issued on Monday, 19 January 2026, which overturned previous rulings that had suspended the swearing-in of Somalia’s elected representatives to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).
In its statement, the Ministry congratulated the nine Members of Parliament elected by the Federal Parliament of Somalia to represent the country in the EALA, highlighting their important role in advancing Somalia’s regional engagement and integration efforts.
The Ministry reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to working closely with East African Community (EAC) Partner States on shared priorities, including trade, mobility, development, and regional stability, underscoring the strategic importance of Somalia’s participation in regional decision-making.
As Somalia continues to deepen its engagement within the East African Community, the Ministry remains committed to ensuring effective representation across all EAC organs and institutions, in support of Somalia’s national interests and regional integration,” the statement said.
The ruling is seen as a positive step toward strengthening Somalia’s role in regional governance, promoting collaboration with neighboring states, and contributing to sustainable development and stability in East Africa.
