Mogadishu (SONNA) — The Minister of Commerce and Industry of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Jamaal Mohamed Hassan, has announced that the ministry is developing a comprehensive policy aimed at boosting domestic production and strengthening the country’s self-sufficiency.
The minister noted that Somalia currently imports a wide range of goods that could be produced locally. In response, the ministry is prioritizing the expansion of industrial output to reduce import dependency while creating significant employment opportunities.
“We can add value to our livestock exports—processing animals into meat, utilizing hides for leather products, and even making use of bones. This will generate jobs and stimulate economic growth,” Minister Jamaal said.
He further emphasized that Somalia is well-positioned to enhance its local production capacity, citing access to broader markets such as the East African Community (EAC), which the country recently joined, as well as increasing demand in international markets.
The initiative is part of wider government efforts to drive economic development through industrialization and sustainable use of local resources.
