ADDIS ABABA (SONNA) — The Federal Republic of Somalia achieved a major diplomatic milestone on Wednesday by securing election to the African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC) for the 2026–2028 term. This development marks a decisive shift in the nation’s continental standing, affirming its growing influence in shaping Africa’s security architecture.

The election took place at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, where member states cast their votes in a display of confidence in Somalia’s trajectory. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed profound gratitude to the nations that supported the candidacy, noting that the victory was made possible through the unity and solidarity demonstrated specifically by the Member States of the Eastern Africa region.

Somalia joins the Council with a clearly defined agenda centered on conflict prevention and the advancement of counter-terrorism cooperation. The government intends to leverage its own hard-won experiences in state-building and security sector reform to provide practical insights to the Council’s deliberations. The delegation emphasized that their tenure will prioritize peacebuilding, reconciliation, and post-conflict recovery efforts across the continent.

This seat on the Council places Mogadishu at the table where critical decisions regarding African collective security are made. The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to multilateralism, pledging to work closely with AU partners to champion a more stable and prosperous Africa for all.
