Mogadishu, (SONNA) — The Minister of Public Works and Housing of the Federal Government of Somalia, Dr. Elmi Mahmoud Nur, has announced that the government is launching major development projects aimed at improving roads and resolving the chronic drainage challenges that disrupt movement in Mogadishu during rainy seasons.
In an exclusive interview with the Raad Raac program on National Media, Minister Elmi revealed that the new project, named “NAGAAD”, has already been piloted in six cities, including Mogadishu, Garowe, and Hargeisa, resulting in noticeable improvements in city beautification, road construction, and drainage systems.
The Minister highlighted that ongoing national projects have significantly transformed urban infrastructure and enhanced the aesthetic appeal and modernization of Somali cities. He further noted that the first-ever National Urban Development Conference will be held in Mogadishu in early November, bringing together international stakeholders to discuss sustainable reconstruction efforts.
According to Minister Elmi, the first phase of the NAGAAD project will focus on constructing underground drainage systems, starting from KM4 Junction to Liido Beach — a project estimated to cost over $50 million.
He added that the official implementation will begin in early 2026, marking a long-term solution to the recurring road damage caused by seasonal rains.
“The government has developed a clear, lasting plan. Nearly $1 billion has already been invested in Mogadishu’s road infrastructure alone. This marks a new beginning that will turn the hopes and dreams of the Somali people into tangible progress,” said Minister Elmi.
