SAMARKAND, Uzbekistan (SONNA) – The State Minister for Education, Heritage, and Higher Education of the Federal Government of Somalia, Ms. Nura Mustaf Mukhtar, is leading a high-level Somali delegation at the 43rd General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The conference is currently being held in the historic city of Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

Addressing the general assembly, Minister Nura delivered a detailed speech providing a comprehensive overview of the education sector in Somalia. She detailed the extensive efforts by the Federal Government to enhance the quality of education and to expand access, ensuring that learning opportunities are available to all Somali children.

In her address, the State Minister highlighted several key achievements. She specifically mentioned the successful recruitment of thousands of teachers in recent years as a direct measure to address educational needs across the country. She further affirmed the government’s commitment to continue this progress by recruiting more educators in the near future.

Minister Nura also elaborated on the significant reforms undertaken in the administration of higher education. She cited the recent approval of the national higher education law and the establishment of the National Commission for Higher Education as foundational steps in strengthening the governance and quality of tertiary education in Somalia.

Concluding her remarks, Minister Nura praised the valuable and collaborative partnership between Somalia and UNESCO. She commended the organization’s core principles, which are built on cooperation, the advancement of knowledge, and mutual respect among member states.
