Kampala, Uganda – The Federal Government of Somalia has affirmed its dedication to addressing the urgent challenges of climate change by actively participating in the 6th Meeting of African Climate Finance Directors, which concluded today in Kampala, Uganda. The meeting, which focused on how Africa can better leverage climate finance, was attended by a high-level Somali delegation.
The delegation was led by the Executive Director of the Somali National Climate Fund, Mr. Liban Obsiye, who, in his address, outlined the government’s efforts to accelerate and take advantage of climate funding. Obsiye stressed that Somalia’s primary focus is on implementing urgent priorities for both prevention and adaptation to climate change.
“We are delighted to participate in the 6th Meeting of Climate Finance Directors, where we presented Somalia’s progress and the opportunities we have in climate finance,” said Executive Director Obsiye. “The exchange of knowledge and experience is crucial to strengthen the resilience of Somalia and Africa as a whole”.
Obsiye also specifically acknowledged the leadership of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who has prioritized climate finance to secure a more prosperous future for the Somali people. The Somali delegation included representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and the National Economic Commission, joining leaders from international climate finance organizations in the discussion.
Somalia remains one of the countries most vulnerable to the effects of climate change, with the nation frequently impacted by recurring floods and droughts. This participation in the meeting highlights the government’s proactive stance in seeking a sustainable future and building national resilience against environmental threats.
