Mogadishu, (SONNA) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Government of Somalia marked Africa Day with an official ceremony held at its headquarters in Mogadishu. This day commemorates the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) on May 25, 1963, which was later transformed into the African Union (AU) in 2002.
Foreign Minister H.E. Abdisalam Abdi Ali emphasized the significance of the day, noting that May 25 stands as a symbol of African solidarity and the enduring vision of unity. He affirmed Somalia’s unwavering dedication to the African agenda, stating that continental priorities are central to Somalia’s foreign policy.
Minister Abdisalam also underscored the importance of justice across Africa, referencing the continent’s historic struggle against colonialism and the need for fairness among its nations. He expressed hope for Africa’s continued progress and reiterated Somalia’s aspiration for shared prosperity.
The event, organized in collaboration with IBS Bank, was attended by several Somali government ministers and African ambassadors based in Mogadishu.
Somalia is a founding member of the OAU and was a signatory to its founding charter in 1963. The country played a prominent role in supporting liberation movements in Southern, Central, and Eastern Africa, and contributed to peace efforts during inter-state conflicts. Notably, Somalia hosted the 11th OAU Summit in Mogadishu in 1974.
