Nairobi, SONNA – Somalia’s Ambassador to Kenya and Permanent Representative to UN-Habitat, Amb. Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle, attended the first 2025 session of the UN-Habitat Executive Board, held at the UN-Habitat headquarters in Nairobi.
The session serves as a key platform for strengthening oversight, accountability, and transparency in global urban development efforts, especially as cities face increasing challenges from global crises.
During his address, Ambassador Jabril emphasized the need for stronger UN-Habitat engagement in fragile and post-conflict contexts, highlighting Somalia’s ongoing urbanization challenges. He called for enhanced technical assistance to help Somali cities manage rapid growth, improve housing access, and ensure dignified living conditions for displaced communities.
“Capacity building for local governments is particularly crucial to achieving sustainable urban development,” he stated, urging greater collaboration between Somalia and UN-Habitat.
Additionally, Ambassador Jabril voiced strong support for increased and predictable core funding for UN-Habitat, noting that countries like Somalia depend on this financial stability to implement long-term urban development initiatives.
“Ensuring financial sustainability will enhance the effectiveness and reach of UN-Habitat’s work, allowing it to better support countries facing urban development challenges,” he added.
The Somali government remains committed to working closely with UN-Habitat and international partners to build resilient, inclusive, and sustainable cities for the future.
