Mogadishu, Somalia – Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ahmed Moallin Fiqi Ahmed, hosted Raisedon Zenenga, the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM). This high-level dialogue marks a significant step towards solidifying the path for Somalia’s future engagement with the United Nations.

The discussions, held at the Ministry’s office in Mogadishu, centered on a critical juncture for Somalia. The two diplomats delved into the advancements achieved on both the security and political fronts within the country. Minister Ahmed and Mr. Zenenga specifically explored areas where the Federal Government of Somalia and the United Nations can further strengthen their collaborative efforts.

A key takeaway from the meeting was the commitment to establish a joint technical committee. This committee, comprised of representatives from both Somalia and the United Nations, will serve as a crucial platform for navigating the planned transition process. The specific focus of the committee will be to meticulously design the structures and mechanisms required for a smooth handover of responsibilities from UNSOM to the United Nations office in Somalia.

This development signifies a growing confidence in Somalia’s ability to assume greater ownership of its future. The joint technical committee represents a collaborative approach, ensuring a seamless transition that leverages the expertise of the United Nations while empowering Somalia to chart its own course.

While the details of the transition plan remain undisclosed, the meeting serves as a positive indicator of Somalia’s progress towards self-sufficiency. The discussions between Minister Ahmed and Mr. Zenenga highlight the commitment of both parties to work hand-in-hand to ensure a successful and sustainable handover.

Analysts suggest that the nature of the UN’s future presence in Somalia will be a central theme in the deliberations of the joint technical committee. The committee’s work is likely to shape the evolving relationship between Somalia and the United Nations, fostering a new era of partnership focused on continued development and long-term stability.

This high-level meeting comes at a crucial time for Somalia. The establishment of the joint technical committee signifies a shared vision for a future where Somalia stands tall on the world stage. The collaborative efforts undertaken by the Somali government and the United Nations offer a glimmer of hope for a brighter and more secure future for the nation.
