Mogadishu, SONNA – The Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation of the Federal Government of Somalia, Mohamed Abdi Xayir (Maareeye), and the Commissioner of the National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mohamud Moalim Abdulle, today held a high-level meeting to advance the Jowhar Offstream Storage Programme (JOSP).
The discussions focused on leveraging the JOSP to enhance flood control, irrigation development, and agricultural productivity, ensuring that local communities benefit from their natural resources and economic growth opportunities.
Officials from both agencies also explored strategies to promote and support Somali farmers, including improving access to modern farming equipment, training programs, and sustainable markets for crop sales.
Commissioner Mohamud Moalim Abdulle emphasized that inter-agency cooperation is vital for developing livelihood infrastructure, particularly in irrigation and agriculture, to mitigate the impact of droughts and recurrent floods.
Minister Hayir highlighted that the JOSP is a strategic initiative for food sovereignty and environmental protection, affirming the Ministry’s commitment to implement effective plans that support Somali farmers and enhance agricultural resilience.
