Mogadishu, (SONNA) – The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, participated in the 26th Extraordinary Summit of East African Community (EAC) Heads of State, which focused on the escalating conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
The virtual summit brought together regional leaders to discuss the crisis. President Mohamud expressed Somalia’s deep concern over the situation in the DRC and urged all conflicting parties to cease hostilities unconditionally and return to the negotiating table.
Drawing from Somalia’s own experience with internal conflicts and their devastating consequences, the President emphasized the importance of protecting civilian areas and diplomatic missions in accordance with international law and human rights principles.
In conclusion, EAC leaders at the summit agreed to convene an urgent joint meeting with the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to discuss a coordinated response to the ongoing conflict in the DRC.
