Mogadishu, SONNA — The House of the People of the Federal Parliament of Somalia has approved the law establishing the National Meteorological and Climate Services Agency, a milestone aimed at strengthening Somalia’s capacity to address climate change and enhance preparedness for natural disasters.
The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Major General Bashiir Mohamed Jaamac, expressed his sincere appreciation to the House of the People for passing the legislation and extended special thanks to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) for its technical support during the law’s development. He highlighted the key role of Dr. Guleid Abdiqadir Artan, Somalia’s Permanent Representative to the WMO, in facilitating the adoption of the law.
Describing the approval as a strategic achievement, the Minister noted that the new agency will serve as a modern national institution responsible for weather forecasting, climate monitoring, and providing scientific data to support evidence-based development planning.
The Agency is expected to play a vital role in supporting the livelihoods of farmers, pastoralists, and fishers, ensuring that communities across Somalia can better prepare for and respond to climate-related challenges.
Major General Bashir reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to implementing the law effectively, transparently, and promptly, ensuring that the agency’s work serves the national interest and contributes to the well-being of the Somali people.
