Mogadishu (SONNA) — The Rector of the Somali National University (SNU), Prof. Dr. Mohamed Mohamud Mohamed, alongside the Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Somalia, officially inaugurated the Al Jazeera Media Hub at the Faculty of Journalism within the University’s College of Social Sciences.
The state-of-the-art facility, funded by Qatar through the Al Jazeera Media Institute, was unveiled during a high-profile ceremony that also launched week-long training programs for Somali journalism students. The sessions, delivered by Al Jazeera experts, aim to equip students from SNU and other universities across Somalia with modern skills tailored to the fast-evolving global media landscape.
In his remarks, Prof. Dr. Mohamed described the inauguration as a major milestone for the university and the Somali media sector. He thanked Qatar and the Al Jazeera Media Institute for their contribution, noting that the initiative would play a vital role in rebuilding journalism in Somalia, which has long suffered the effects of decades of conflict.
“Quality journalism is central to Somalia’s recovery,” he said. “Well-trained journalists will be instrumental in fostering national unity, safeguarding public awareness, and countering disinformation.”
The new hub is expected to serve as a key platform for enhancing journalism education, strengthening professional standards, and empowering the next generation of Somali media practitioners. The event also recognized the contribution of prominent Somali media figures, including Mr. Yusuf Garaad Omar, alongside Al Jazeera’s continued technical support.
