Mogadishu(SONNA)-Somali National News Agency, SONNA is celebrating its 60th founding anniversary at an event being held at its main headquarter at Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism in the capital Mogadishu on Friday afternoon.
Minister and Deputy Minister of the Information, Culture and Tourism of Federal Government of Somalia congratulated SONNA staff and encouraged them redouble their efforts in promoting public services, raising awareness and convey Government’s message to both local and International media.
“Today is another great day, it is founding day of the official news agency, SONNA. It has a leading role in the Somalia’s media framework and disseminates interesting domestic issues to the international audience. It has achieved its goal as media across the world quote SONNA as the country’s official news agency”, Minister of Information, Daud Aweis said.
Somali National News Agency, SONNA was founded on January 5, 1964 under the Ministry of Information based in the capital Mogadishu and it was operating throughout the 18th regions in the country before the collapse of the central Government in 1990. It was the oldest media house after Radio Mogadishu.
Ministry of Information of Somalia relaunched SONNA operations in 2011, in order, to restore the official news agency’s services to cover the news in the country at large and feed the radio, the TV, the Paper and other local media stations.
The Agency contributes news stories, and articles to other international news agencies and media houses.
