Kismayo (SONNA) – The Somali National Army (SNA) has officially taken over the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) base at Kudhaa in the Lower Jubba region. This pivotal move marks a crucial success in the third phase of the force reduction initiative.

During the handover ceremony, Major General Suleiman Ibrahim, an ATMIS Military Engineer, lauded the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) for their unwavering efforts in diminishing the influence of Al-Shabaab and fostering peace throughout the region. He emphasized the vital role played by KDF in stabilizing the area and supporting the objectives of ATMIS.

Adding to this sentiment, Major Sakariye Mohamed Omar from the SNA’s Planning Department commended the relentless efforts of the Somali National Army. He highlighted the commitment of the SNA brigade that will now oversee the base, pledging their utmost dedication to protecting the local population and ensuring their safety.

The event saw the attendance of several high-profile officials, including the UNSOS Transition Plan Representative Santosh Koka, Brigadier General Seif Salim Rashid, Commander of the 2nd Division, and other dignitaries from both ATMIS and the Somali National Army. Their presence underscored the collaborative effort and shared vision for a secure and stable Somalia.

This transition represents a monumental step forward in Somalia’s journey towards self-reliance and security, demonstrating the growing capability and professionalism of the Somali National Army in taking over key operational responsibilities.
