AWDHEEGLE – The Somali National Army (SNA), with crucial support from Ugandan forces of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), has successfully completed its operation to fully liberate the strategic Awdheegle district in the Lower Shabelle region. The victory was announced by the Ministry of Defense’s spokesperson, Sheikh Abukar, during a press briefing held this morning in Awdheegle.
The liberation of Awdheegle marks a major milestone in the ongoing “Silent Storm” offensive, a multi-phase military campaign aimed at dismantling Al-Shabaab’s presence in southern Somalia. Awdheegle is a key agricultural town located about 80 kilometers southwest of Mogadishu, and its recapture is vital for securing critical supply routes and protecting local communities. The district had been a hideout and a source of revenue for the militants.
In his address, Sheikh Abukar confirmed that the joint forces have established full control over the area, and they are now conducting clearance operations to ensure the safety of residents. He praised the cooperation between the SNA and AUSSOM, highlighting their effectiveness in executing the planned operation.
The successful offensive is a strong signal of the Somali government’s commitment to restoring peace and stability. The government aims to extend its authority across the country, creating a secure environment for development and humanitarian efforts.
