Mogadishu (SONNA): The presidents of the regional administrations of Somalia have expressed their support for the constitutional amendment procedures passed by the two houses of the federal parliament this week, which will pave the way for the completion of the country’s constitution.

The president of the South West regional government, Abdicasis Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen, said that the parliament’s decision was a historic achievement and a milestone for the constitutional process. He said that the completion of the constitution will not be an end in itself, but a means to achieve peace, stability and development in the country. He also praised the president of the federal government, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, for his leadership and courage in spearheading the constitutional reforms.

The president of the Galmudug regional government, Ahmed Abdi Kariye, also commended the parliament for approving the constitutional amendments, which he said were essential for the country’s progress and unity. He urged the Somali people to put aside their differences and work together for the common good of the nation. He said that the government was determined to finalize the constitution and end the transitional period.

The constitutional amendments, which were adopted by the House of the People on Tuesday  and by the Upper House on Tuesday, include provisions on the structure of the federal system, the allocation of powers and resources, the representation of women and minorities, and the protection of human rights. The amendments are expected to be ratified by a national referendum, which is scheduled to take place later this year.
